1.1 Introduction:
Born at a time when Hiligaynon literature was flourishing, Ramon Muzones later worked
his way to become among the most well-known names in the West Visayan literary world. He
lived at a time when Americans were the dominant political entity, even in language. During this
period he championed being a master of his Hiligaynon Mother-tongue. He was later awarded as
a Philippine National Artist, a privilege that was formerly withheld from regional writers. He
was able to claim his place in Philippine literature by the sheer hard work he submitted to his
craft, having 61 novels under his name. His very works and life became a reflection of the West
Visayan social, political and economic climate during the mid-twentieth century, as recalled in

Filipino National Artist for Literature
Ramon Muzones (March 20, 1913 – August 17, 1992) was a writer and lawyer and the posthumous recipient of the National Artist of the Philippines for Literature award in the Philippines in 2018.[1] He wrote in Hiligaynon and popularized Hiligaynon literature.[2]
A Karay·a,[3] Muzones was born in Iloilo City[1] and was the oldest of ten children of Santiago Muzones and Florentina Larupay. He received his law degree at Central Philippine University in 1952. He wrote 62 novels in the course of his life, the first of which was Tibud nga Bulawan in 1938.[4] He was a founder of an organization for Hiligaynon writers called Sumakwelan.[2][5]
