History
[edit]Named after doctor Albert Schweitzer, the school was founded in the s as part of Ohm High School in Erlangen, as an increasing number of families moved from the city's core to the area west of the Regnitz.[1] The Oberrealschule Erlangen-West was founded on 7 September to provide a local secondary school as well as to expand the capacity of the Ohm High School. The newly founded school was originally located in the building of the now neighboring Hermann Hedenus School and had a total of approximately 60 students in two fifth-grade classes.[2]
The current name was given to the school as its founding date coincidentally matched the anniversary of death of Albert Schweitzer. The name was changed on 26 November , after the school's parent council voted unanimously for the change and the school was given the last letter Albert Schweitzer had written before his death by university professor Heinrich Franke. Walter Künneth (1 January in Etzelwang – 26 October in Erlangen) was a German Protestant theologian. During the Nazi era, he was part of the Confessing Church, and in the s took part in the debate around the demands of Rudolf Bultmann to 'de-mythologize' the New Testament as an advocate of a word-oriented interpretation of the Bible. The Walter Künneth Prize is named after him.

[edit]Walter Künneth was the fourth child of minister Lorenz Künneth and his wife, Setta (born Setta Schlupper). Young Künneth grew up in the second ministry location of his father, at Hersbruck. His mother died shortly after his birth, due to an illness connected with the birth. After attending the humanities Gymnasium in Erlangen (where he was especially shaped by the neo-Lutheran theology of Phillip Bachmann and the faculty), young Künneth studied evangelical Theology in both Erlangen and Tübingen, from Fall until , with the last two at Tübingen influenced by Karl Heim and Adolf Schlatter. He attained a doctorate under Friedrich Brunstad in Philosophie in , with a work on Richard Rothe's Idea of God. He also joined the Christian student-organization known as Wingolf.
