Samuel Johnson was an English writer who made many contributions to literature as a poet, playwright, essayist and critic. He was born in 1709 in Lichfield, England and studied at Oxford University. Although poor, he went on to write influential works, including the first English language dictionary. In his literary criticism, Johnson described excellent writing as relying on simple language. In his preface to Shakespeare, Johnson rejected previous views of classical unities and argued drama should reflect life, though he also noted Shakespeare's faults in morality and plot crafting.
