More than most who bear it, Yanni truly lives up to his title as a world musician. The 57-year-old self-taught Greek pianist/composer made his name by taking his sweeping, majestic music to the far corners of the Earth, from the Acropolis in Greece to the Taj Mahal in India to the Forbidden City in China.
“You are never in control for the live concerts,” said the man born Yiannis Hrysomallis, during a recent teleconference with reporters. “No single concert that I have ever given in my life has been the same. It starts different, the middle is different. Mostly, the ending ends the same, but it’s how we get there — it’s a different road every time. The events, what country you’re in, what state you’re in, what the mood is in the audience, what time of year it is, all of that (makes a difference).”
For Yanni, sometimes that means headlining the first-ever performance at a 16th-century citadel, as he did for his new CD/DVD set “Yanni: Live at El Morro, Puerto Rico.” Sometimes it means headlining a casino outside of the Twin Cities, as he will do Friday, May 4. Musical artist
Yiannis Chryssomallis[1] (Greek: Γιάννης Χρυσομάλλης; born November 14, 1954), known professionally as Yanni (YAH-nee), is a Greek[6]composer, keyboardist, pianist, and music producer.
Yanni continues to use the musical shorthand that he developed as a child,[7][8] blending jazz, classical, soft rock, and world music[5] to create predominantly instrumental works.[9] Although this genre of music was not well suited for commercial pop radio and music television,[4][10] Yanni received international recognition by producing concerts at historic monuments and by producing videos that were broadcast on public television.[10] His breakthrough concert, Live at the Acropolis, yielded the second best-selling music concert video of all time.[11][12][13] Additional historic sites for Yanni's concerts have included India's Taj Mahal, China's Forbidden City, the United Arab Emirates' Burj Khalifa,[14] Russia's Kremlin,[15] Puerto Rico's El Morro
